How the Diary came into Being

My great -grandfather, Fletcher Pomeroy, a member of Company D and later quartermaster sergeant of the 7th Kansas Cavalry, maintained a daily diary most of his life. His life spanned 86 eventful years from 1841 to 1927. In 1915 he transcribed the portion of his diaries dealing with the Civil War, and gave a typed copy to each of his sons. His youngest son, Fletcher W. Pomeroy (my grandfather) passed his copy of the diary to his only son, Orville Pomeroy (my uncle).

I learned of the diary's existence at a family reunion, although I have subsequently learned that it was extensively quoted in Stephen Starr's book, Jennison's Jayhawkers. I am now in the process of converting the diary to digital text which I intend to make available on this site as I finish doing so.
